The Peoria County Sustainability & Resource Conservation Department will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection event on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Expo Gardens in Peoria. This event is open to all Illinois residents by appointment only.
Registration is available online at www.peoriacounty.org/1018. Residents without Internet access can call (309) 679-6690 to make an appointment Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
“Hazardous waste should not be included with residents’ curbside trash pickup,” said Sustainability Coordinator Becca Cottrell. “These items require special disposal methods. We are fortunate that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is once again partnering with us to hold this event and help us keep these items out of our landfill.”
Accepted materials include:
• acids
• corrosives
• oil-based paints
• paint thinners
• mercury and thermometers
• insecticides, pesticides, herbicides
• antifreeze
• old gasoline
• cleaning products
• unwanted medications
• household batteries
• used motor oil
• pool chemicals
Materials NOT accepted include: latex paint; agricultural, business, or institutional wastes; ammunition; fireworks or explosives; propane tanks; fire extinguishers; lead-acid batteries; cell phones or electronics; needles or sharps; controlled substances; appliances; and tires.
