On Monday, June 7, 2021, at approximately 5:58 p.m., Peoria County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the intersection of Waverly Ave and Kellogg Ave in West Peoria for an accident with serious injuries involving a vehicle and a male riding a motorized bicycle. The West Peoria Fire Department responded to the scene to give medical attention to the occupants involved. One vehicle involved--a Chevy Equinox SUV--had one occupant: a 21-year-old female. The motorized bicyclist was identified as a 33-year-old male.
According to witnesses, the Chevy Equinox was traveling westbound on Kellogg Ave and did not completely stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Kellogg and Waverly. The SUV truck the motorized bicyclist that was traveling southbound on Waverly Ave.
The bicyclist was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center with serious injuries and in grave condition. Despite aggressive resuscitative efforts, the motorized bicyclist, Corey D. Griffin, 33, of West Peoria, was pronounced dead at 6:28 p.m.
Autopsy performed the morning of June 8, 2021, demonstrated that Griffin suffered multiple blunt force head injuries that were incompatible with life and likely died shortly after the collision. Griffin was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Toxicology testing is pending.
The driver of the Chevy Equinox, 21-year-old Destinee Cole, was issued a citation by the Peoria County Sheriff's Office for disobeying a stop sign. The case will be forwarded to the Peoria County State's Attorney's Office for review and any further charges.
