Free Community Classes Offered by Peoria County

Peoria County’s “Learn with the County” educational class series continues in October with classes on personal safety and sustainability. Classes are for ages 18 and older and are free.

October Schedule:

Protect Yourself with Self Defense Techniques

October 9 at Peoria Public Library Lincoln Branch at 6 pm

Instructor: Lt. Joe Hartwig, Peoria County Sheriff’s Office

Learn how to protect yourself if attacked. Peoria County Sheriff's Office personnel will describe and demonstrate self-defense techniques that may save your life. Participants will have an opportunity to practice self-defense techniques in a controlled environment.


Personal Safety: Don’t Become a Victim 

October 15 at Alpha Park Library (Bartonville) at 6 pm

Instructor: Aimee Shinall, Peoria County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Coordinator

This class will provide valuable information to help keep you and your family safe. Staff will explain how people can protect themselves against identity theft and how to avoid falling victim to common scams. She will explain how to recognize, avoid, and escape abusive behaviors. People attending this workshop will also learn how to protect themselves and their property from residential burglary.


Sustainability for the Entire Community

October 23 at Peoria Public Library Lincoln Branch at 6 pm

Instructor: Rebecca Cottrell, Sustainability and Resource Conservation
Peoria County is a leader in sustainability, to the benefit of all residents and visitors in our region. Staff will describe government efforts to conserve resources and preserve our environment for future generations. Participants in this workshop will learn specific actions they can do at home and work to improve economic, environmental, and social sustainability.
